Ted Wernham, a former member of city council, is a wealth coach who provides financial and income management advice, including how to save taxes. He operates Wernham Wealth Management in Byron, Ont.

He declined to comment on any particular tax shelter.

“We don’t participate in these schemes,” Wernham said. “In fact, we warn people about these schemes.”

The Canada Revenue Agency decision to audit participants in them “is righteous and valid.”

“The old story about something too good to be true usually is,” Wernham said.  “If the motivation is greed, rather than good, it is probably bad.”

He said he worries about the effect on legitimate, long-standing charitable organizations such as Foundation London, the Salvation Army and the Poppy Fund.

“People shouldn’t think that charity has become a bad word.”

While blended families often struggle with what is fair versus what is equal when dividing up assets, it’s important not to forget what is financially smart.

Financial planner Ted Wernham of Wernham Wealth Management said some people overlook the tax complications of estate planning in an effort to be fair when they divvy up property. He said he had a client who didn’t know RRSPs generally flow tax-free to a spouse but are fully taxed by a child beneficiary.

“The client had remarried and wanted to leave the RRSP money to the children and the cottage to his wife. Totally wrong for tax reasons. He thought that was the best equality to pursue,” said Mr. Wernham, who said he helped his client rearrange the estate plan and saved the estate “tens of thousands of dollars.”

Estate planning discussions, like many financial conversations in families, can be highly emotional and unearth conflicting beliefs, especially in blended families. But the experts agree the conversation is necessary as early as possible.

“Just as soon as you’re not giving them bottles of wine and bouquets of roses anymore. Once the romantic phase has ended, it’s time to talk about finances,” Mr. Wernham said.

wsj-logoTORONTO (Dow Jones)–Promoting a product is no longer the key tactic for advisers to reach potential  clients. For many of them, marketing their knowledge and experience is increasingly more effective, allowing them to cast a wider net and attract people to listen.

“People are fed up with glossy brochures,” says Ted Wernham, a certified financial services broker and principal of London, Ontario-based Wernham Wealth Management Inc.

So instead of meeting people just to offer products, Wernham opted to offer a free 2.5-hour seminar four years ago on helping boomers create a retirement blueprint. And these days, he also conducts a radio program every Saturday afternoon entitled “Building Wealth” although his services still include offering segregated funds, annuities, life insurance an critical illness insurance.

At the monthly seminars, Wernham sticks to helping people craft a retirement blueprint. His weekly radio shows that are also archived through online podcasts cover a wider range of topics, such as new tax initiatives, arranging estate plans for a second spouse or the children of first marriage, or government initiatives for old age security. Although he spends roughly C$1,000 per month on both projects, the investment seems to be paying off. Over the past few years, close to 100% of the prospective new clients who call his office have heard him on the radio. Just recently, he heard from a couple who had been listening to his program since it was aired for the first time three years ago. They are now clients. “I wanted to create an environment that would attract people for us to provide knowledge” says Wernham. “It’s a process of familiarity.”
